# Overview The War of Smoke & Shield is the most recent conflict between the [[Sacred Lands of Gainier]] and [[Séllur]]. The war began when the Sacred Lands invaded the Sovereign Dusk Counties with the intent of conquering them in 574. Séllur seized the opporunity to intervene on behalf of the Sélluria worshippers in the Dusk Counties and to combat the Sacred Land's aggression. The war then became a three sided affair between the Sacred Lands and Séllur who both sought to conquer the Dusk Counties. The war waged for many years with the knights of Séllur reaching a stalemate against the Sacred Land's powerful wizards. Eventually Séllur was able to push back The Sacred Lands and win the day behind heroics from some of Séllur's greatest knights in 588. The War of Smoke & Shield is also where the [[Midinet]] and [[Coucher]] rivalry reached its current intensity with Duke Arnaud Midinet and Archduke Vykith Coucher both being found dead after Vykith's capture. Nobody knows who was truly at fault but both sides blame the other's dishonorable nature. # Heroes **Sir Rudolf Midinet** Sir Rudolf Midinet was a young man during the War of Smoke & Shield but is now one of the oldest members of the Fleurier Order. The brother of Eldion Midinet, Rudolf is a model Midinet knight. He gained glory during the war by singlehandedly taking a Coucher castle. He has slown down in his old age but refuses to retire. **Count Orderic Marleau** *For more information see [[Orderic Marleau]]* Known as Sir Orderic Marleau during the War of Smoke & Shield, Orderic is the older brother of Sir Valoric. While he does not have the draconic gifts Valoric does, his swordsmanship more than makes up for it. He did not lose a duel in the 14 years the war waged. He became Count not long after the war's end. **Sir Valoric "The Dragon's Breath" Marleau** Sir Valoric Marleau was the younger brother of Count Orderic and was gifted with the ability to wield dragon's breath. He was named the commander of the [[Fleurier Order]] shortly after the War of Smoke & Shield ended. Many accounts cite him as one of Séllur's strongest forces both strategically and on the battlefield. He lost his life during the [[Moondrop Rebellion]] in 509. **Sir Eldion Midinet** Sir Eldion Midinet is an uncle of [[Vivienne Midinet|Duchess Vivienne Midinet]] and one of Séllur's most powerful mages. The War of Smoke & Shield was his prime where he rained fire upon the Sacred Land's forces. He is considered to be quite odd, both for being a Midinet with an affinity of magic and because of his quirky nature.
