Khenra have a unique way of life. From birth, they are never separated from their twin, except for brief moments. They also participate in the Trials of Khufara. The Trials of Khufara are a series of tasks and challenges that a Khenra must complete over the course of their lifetime in order to reach Ascension, the afterlife where Ramunset resides. There are five Trials total: the Trial of Initiation, the Trial of Erudition, the Trial of Ego, the Trial of Zeal, and the Trial of Passage.  The Trial of Initiation: The Trial of Initiation is undertaken by all Khenra when they turn 13, where a Khenra must learn to fight alongside their brethren, ultimately sparring against them in a grand tournament. Khenran twins fight alongside each other, learning their siblings moves and patterns, strengthening the bond between them. Khenra that fight at the tournament are judged by the elders of the city. Any Khenra pair deemed unfit in combat is held back and must repeat the Trial again the following year. Most Khenra take several years to pass as they train and hone their skills with the blade, though some prodigies can pass the Trial in much shorter times. The Trial of Erudition: The Trial of Erudition is where a Khenra must learn not only about Khenran history, but also themselves. Khenra must make a pilgrimage, by foot, to the [[Pillar of Dawn]], which contains a grand library of knowledge. Here, they spend months learning about their predecessors who came before them. The Trial is designed to give each Khenra a deeper understanding of the Trials and the path ahead of them. Each Khenra is meant to find the path that calls to them through their time reflecting. A Khenra must spend a minimum of two years in the Pillar of Dawn before they can move forward; however Khenra are instructed to stay longer if they feel a calling to.  Once a Khenra has learnt enough to clearly understand the world around them as well as the path they must walk, then they can move to the next Trial.  The Trial of Ego: When taking the Trial of Ego, each Khenra must make a choice: to take the Path of the Warrior or the Path of the Dreamer. This is the first and only decision a Khenra will ever make independent of their twin. This is also the only time in the Trial Khenra twins are separated from each other. Each Khenra decides their path and then separates from their twin until both have fully completed their path. To take the Path of the Warrior means to dedicate yourself to the blade, to take up the creed of valor and fight with such ferocity and formidability that the ancestors take notice. To take the Path of the Dreamer means to discipline yourself with the ancestors, to learn their otherworldly magic and become an apostle of the spiritual. A Warrior must train relentlessly, pushing themselves to their limits in their practice. The regiments are excruciating, but teach discipline and perseverance. Warrior Khenra duel each other, honing their skills and mastering their fighting styles. A Warrior fights to prove themself, to battle with such prowess that they are recognized by the great ancestors. When a Warrior has finally achieved this milestone, they shimmer with radiance emanating from within before promptly falling into a trance. Here, they meet their ancestors, who bring the Khenra closer spiritually to Ascension. For the Dreamer, they practice these trances, where they regularly attempt to connect with their ancestors. While impossible at first, their skill over time will grow, as their spiritual connection to the afterlife strengthens. This connection also grants them manipulation over magical forces around them. While a Dreamer spends more time in contact with the ancestors, the connection is not direct and ancestors will not fully manifest until the Dreamer has completed the Trial. Once a Dreamer has attained enough spiritual connection, they fall into a trance identical to the Warrior. While a Khenra who has completed this Trial must wait for their twin to also complete it, the strong link Khenra twins have almost always results in completion of the Trial within two weeks of each other.  The Trial of Zeal: After the Trial of Ego, Khenra rejoin with their twin for the remainder of their lives and must take the Trial of Zeal, where they travel outside the borders of Khemetis and experience the world. This Trial does not outline specifically what a Khenra must do to complete the task, however it specifies that a Khenra must “follow their calling in the land, and continue until that calling is satisfied”. A Khenra that has made it to the Trial of Zeal has a strong spiritual understanding and a firm concept of self. The Khenra can be relied on to find this calling and they will see it to completion. This may take form in many different ways, and Khenra may walk for many years before finding their calling. However, they ultimately will find it in the end, and once completed, may embark on the final Trial. The Trial of Passage: The Trial of Passage is the penultimate culmination of a yearslong journey for a Khenra. Khenra that have reached this point come from all ages. Each path varies so much that a Khenra may be nearing middle age by the time they reach this Trial. Regardless, this Trial sees a Khenra return to their hometown, back to their roots. Here, they spend a week, sitting back to back with their twin, and meditate. Those in their hometown will provide food and water for the Khenra, but typically a Khenra will fast for the duration. Over the course of this week, the pair will reflect on their entire life, from childhood to adolescence, across the various journeys they’ve taken over the Trials. The connection between the two is strengthened to its peak as they symbolically become one. It is at the end of this week-long meditation that the Khenra transcend and connect with [[Murann]]. This connection cannot be described in words, and those who try express it as akin to a blind person seeing for the first time.  It is finally here, at their birthplace, that the final Trial is completed. After this, Khenra will rejoin the rest of society, working in whichever way calls to them. After completing the Trials of Khufara, Khenra twins are considered to have become one entity in the eyes of Murann. Because of this, physical proximity is no longer a factor in their closeness. No matter how far away Khenra twins are, they will be with each other. They can feel the others emotions and understand their thoughts. As a result, many Khenra twins do live in separate households for the purposes of raising a family, however almost all remain within one mile of their twin. [[Unkhara]] can complete the Trials of Khufara, but it is much harder for them.
